What is an RPG?

A Risk Purchasing Group (RPG) is a unique organizational structure created by federal legislation, enacted by Congress in 1981 and amended in 1986 in response to the lack of availability and affordability of liability insurance to medical professionals and other groups. The statute permits homogenous groups of insureds with similar exposures to loss to achieve the economies of scale that result from purchasing insurance on a group basis. RPGs have the ability to create liability insurance programs uniquely designed for their members and, through their group bargaining power, to influence policy pricing and provisions.

Why was the DT Preferred Group, LLC RPG was created?

Professional liability premiums have significantly grown over the years, more than 800% in some areas since late 1970s. During this period there has been:Risk Purchasing Group

  • Limited control over cost of professional liability insurance
  • Premiums, terms and conditions set by insurance company
  • Market cycles (i.e., “hard markets”) adversely impacting many doctors

We found that many insurance companies do not apply loss data specific to Orthopaedic Surgeons to derive rates. As a result, physicians of various specialties are lumped into a single "group" plan where Orthopaedic Surgeons may be subsidizing other medical specialty's premiums. In addition, many insurance companies do not provide Orthopaedic-specific risk management or educational programs and insurance company claims specialists or defense attorneys may or may not have familiarity with Orthopaedics, should a suit arise.

Utilizing the federal Liability Risk Retention Act of 1986, Orthopaedic Surgeons may benefit by joining a risk purchasing group in order to negotiate, using the power of numbers as a purchasing strength, an effective solution to inequitable professional liability insurance premiums. This can result in highly competitive premiums with specialized rate classes for Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The Ortho-Preferred® program was created in response to the increasing professional liability insurance rates faced by Orthopaedic Surgeons nationwide. Built on the foundation of DT Preferred Group, LLC, a risk purchasing group (RPG), Orthopaedic Surgeons have been provided an opportunity to unite together to leverage collective bargaining.

The RPG has teamed up exclusively with MedPro Group, the nation’s most trusted and highest rated (A++) carrier in the healthcare liability industry, and it’s affiliates, to provide you with highly competitive premiums with specialized rate classes for orthopaedic surgeons as well as favorable terms and conditions.

In addition, as one of the many benefits of your membership in the RPG you may enjoy complimentary, sophisticated Orthopaedic Surgeon-specific risk prevention training that will help to curb future losses.
