Orthopaedic Advisory Board

An advisory board has been formed consisting of prominent Orthopaedic Surgeons knowledgeable in risk prevention and medical education. These skill sets will be used to determine the needs of members and to assist in developing requirements with Medical Protective.
The advisory board will assist in the recommendation and creation of additional services as needed by the members, such as:
- Quality Education
- Risk Prevention
- Defense Team Training
- Educational Grants
The Orthopedic Advisory Board Members
Henry A. Backe, Jr, MD earned his medical degree from Temple University and completed his surgical internship at the University of California, San Diego and his orthopaedic residency at Temple University Hospital. He was an Emanual B. Kaplan Hand Surgery Fellow at the Hospital for Joint Diseases and a fellow of hip and knee service at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Backe is a professor at Qinnipiac University and is active in teaching Yale University residents. In practice in Fairfield, Connecticut since 1993, he specializes in joint replacement surgery, hand surgery, and sports injuries related to the upper extremities. Dr. Backe is a director of the Fairfield Surgery Center and President and Founder of the Orthopaedic Specialty Group Education Foundation, Inc. He is a member of several medical associations, including the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, for which he serves as Vice President. Dr. Backe is also active with the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundations and participates in yearly surgical missions in Central America.
Charles Lowry Barnes, MD completed medical school at University of Arkansas College of Medicine in Little Rock. He earned a certificate in business administration for physicians at Auburn University College of Business and completed fellowships in adult reconstructive surgery/arthritis surgery at Brigham & Womens Hospital, Harvard Medical School and AO/ASIF adult orthopaedic fellowship at Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland, as well as the John N. Insall Travelling Fellowship. Dr. Barnes is an active member of multiple medical societies, holding leadership positions in many of them. He also serves as an editorial board member and peer reviewer of several orthopaedic journals and has published over 50 articles and written 10 book chapters. Dr. Barnes is in the process of establishing a new research center for total joint evaluation. The 5,000 square foot facility will allow for function and gait testing via motion detecting and use of force plates.
Fred Flandry, MD is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS) and the American Academy of Pain Management and has earned a certificate of added qualification in orthopaedic sports medicine by the ABOS. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Flandry is deeply involved in the research efforts of The Hughston Foundation, Inc., where he serves as CEO and Director of Medical Education. He serves on the North American faculty for teaching techniques of the Swiss AO group, is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine, and an examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Flandry also isChief of Staff at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital and serves on the board of directors of the Medical Association of Georgia. A member of the American Orthopaedic Association, he has been bestowed the title of Honorary Knight by the government of Columbia, South America for his work educating physicians in that country.
Richard J. Haynes, MD is a graduate of the University of Califonia San Francisco School of Medicine. His Orthopaedic Surgery training was at the Letterman Army Medical Center and the Shriners Hospital San Francisco. He practiced Orthopaedic Surgery in the US Army (Colonel, Retired), Phoenix AZ (Canyon Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program and Houston TX (Shriners Hospital, Chief of Staff). He is currently a Member of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education Field Staff. He is Past-President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Western Orthopaedic Association. He has served on the AAOS Board of Councilors and as the AAOS Member of the AMA Resource Based Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC). He serves on the Board of Directors of OREF. He was the 2006 recipient of the OREF William F. Tipton, Jr. Leadership Award and the 2007 Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist Award from Southern Orthopaedic Association. He has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Mutual Insurance Company of Arizona.
Lawrence R. Housman, MD completed his medical education at University of Alberta,Edmonton, Canada, his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Montreal General Hospital, McGill University in Montreal, and a fellowship at Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto. He served as President of Tucson Orthopaedic Institute in Tucson, Arizona from 1999 to 2007 and was Chief of Staff for Tucson Medical Center from 1996 to 1997. A member of many medical associations, Dr. Housman is Managing Director of the Western Orthopaedic Association (WOA) and served as its president in 2006. He also served as president of the Arizona Medical Association from 1994 to 1996. In 2007, Dr. Housman received the National Service Award from the Arizona Medical Association. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Board certified by the ABOS, he Dr. Housman is a member of\ the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and served as a member of the AAOS Board of Councilors.
L. Andrew Koman, MD professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University with specialty training in hand, pediatrics and microsurgery, is a graduate of Duke University. He served on the Duke University faculty for 18 months and has been at Wake Forest for 29 years. A member of 20 educational societies, Dr. Koman has been president of eight of these organizations, including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2009. He has over 250 publications, three patents, and has written four books. Dr. Koman has been awarded over $5 million in research funds, including an NIH RO1 in microcirculation, and has received the Kappa Delta Clinical Research Award from the Orthopaedic Society of North America (OREF), the Heune Memorial Award from Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), and the Established Investigator Award from Wake Forest University. His clinical practice is devoted to pediatric hand surgery (including cerebral palsy and spasticity), peripheral nerve, brachial plexus, hand surgery, and pediatrics.
Peter J. Mandell, MD was born, raised and has practiced orthopaedic surgery for his entire career in the San Francisco Peninsula. He is a cum laude graduate of Yale College and received his MD from the University of California San Francisco where he is an assistant clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Mandell has long had interests in advocacy, health policy, and medical association volunteering. He served over seven years on the AAOS Board of Councilors, three years on the AAOS Board of Directors, and currently chairs the AAOS Council on Advocacy. In addition, Dr. Mandell is a past President of the California Orthopaedic Association and currently serves as First Vice President of the Western Orthopaedic Association. He has given numerous lectures at scientific meetings and been interview by the New YorkTimes, , and National Public Radio. He has testified before the U.S. Congress and the California State Assembly.
William McMaster, MD attended Yale undergraduate and Case Western Reserve Medical School. His post graduate training included general surgery residency at the University of Chicago and orthopaedic residency at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He completed a USPHS fellowship in surgical research at the University of Chicago. An ABOS certified orthopaedic surgeon with 36 years of clinical practice, Dr. McMasters sub special interests are adult reconstruction and sports medicine. At UCI, he served as Chair of Orthopaedics from 1976 to 1982 and is currently a clinical professor. Dr. McMaster is the senior partner of Adult & Pediatric Orthopaedic Specialists, Inc. in Orange, CA and Chief of the Orthopaedic Section at the Long Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. McMaster is a board member of COA, WOA, AAOS CORQAT, SICOT Foundation and OREF Fellowship and a CME Grants board member. For the VA, he is a member of the National Orthopaedic Advisory Board.
James A. Nunley, MD attended Duke University for his undergraduate degree and earned his MS and MD degrees from Tulane University. He completed two years of general surgical residency at UCLA, and then returned to Duke University for an orthopaedic residency. Dr. Nunley is a professor and Chairman of Orthopaedics at Duke University. His areas of research interest include biomechanics of ankle stability, sports related injuries to the foot and ankle, and avascular necrosis of the talus. The author of over 180 peer-
Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD was born in Sarwania, India and began his medical education and orthopaedic residency training in India. His training continued in the United States with fellowships in adult joint reconstruction and hand surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. At Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Ranawat served as the James A. Nicholas Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Director of the Ranawat Orthopaedic Center, and Ranawat Orthopaedic Research Foundation. Currently, he is a clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University and an attending orthopaedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Ranawats practice focuses on primary total hip and knee replacement and revision total joint surgery. He has served as president of many medical associations and holds patents for total hip, knee, wrist, and elbow implant systems.
Robert N. Richards, MD is a graduate of Bucknell University and Temple Medical School. After his internship at Bryn Mawr Hospital, he completed his orthopaedic residency at Temple University Hospital under the direction of the late Dr. John Lachman and Shriners Chief of Surgery, Dr. Howard Steel. Dr. Richards has been serving the rural south central Pennsylvania area as a general orthopaedic surgeon with special interests in sports medicine and total joints for 27 years. For many years, he and his father, Dr. Robert Richards, Sr., ran free Shriners crippled childrens clinics in their Chambersburg office. Dr. Richards is a past president and member of the surgical staff of the Chambersburg Hospital, served on the board of directors at Summit Health Surgical Center, and is President of Orthopaedic Associates. A member of many professional societies, Dr. Richards is President of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association.
